Creating Harmony in Your Life

Harmony in life = balance. Oh man, this is a heavy topic. Not heavy as in sad, but heavy as in deep. Deep into the core of your soul deep, [[me saying that to you in my ancient, wise, mentor-like, old man voice with my fist tightly clenched against my chest making extreme eye contact with you]] Ha! No idea where that came from but seemed appropriate young grasshopper 😜! But seriously, this is a heart-to-heart subject that requires a lot of self awareness, insight, and honesty. Are you ready!?!

Harmony is defined by Merriam Webster as, “a pleasing combination or arrangement of different things.” It is a term typically used in the context of music, but it is so applicable to life in general! Do we all have different elements in life? YES! Do we want all of those elements arranged or combined in a pleasing way? ABSOLUTELY!

We all have a million and one things we need to do, things we want to do, things we struggle with, etc. We all feel a sense of overwhelming imbalance in our lives at one time or another. And it’s chaos! I have been there, and I struggle with staying away from that place of imbalanced chaos every single day. When I wake up every morning, I strive for a sense of balance, that sense of harmony in life.

Between taking care of my family, cleaning the house, work, school, meal planning, freezer meals, cooking meals, the bills, ….AAAAGGGHHHH! There are so many elements in daily life, it makes my head spin! And then on top of that, after taking care of everything and everyone else, finding some “me time” to do yoga, read a book, or play piano. Is there ever enough time in the day? It sure doesn’t feel like it!

So how do we fix it? We create balance and harmony!

What Does Harmony in Life Mean To You?

To me, this means feeling that sense of accomplishment that I’m getting everything done that I need to get done while also including every element of my life. Instead of spending 5 hours one day on school work to get school work done, I’m spending an hour every day to get the same school work done, which also allows for other things in life, not just school. It’s balance… it’s harmony. Everything is being done in the right proportion of time so that I feel productive and content all at the same time. What does it mean to you?

Think of a nutrition pie chart. You can find all kinds of charts out there regarding the proportion of foods you should eat at each meal to eat a well-balanced meal, right? Well, picture one but instead of thinking about nutrition, think about your happiness. Instead of filling up that pie chart with the various proportions of different types of food groups, fill up that pie chart with various elements that make up your daily life. We need a balanced life as much as we need balanced nutrition.

When creating harmony in your life, the goal is to not only balance the things you do and the various aspects of your life, but also to balance all elements individually within yourself to create a sense of self harmony as a whole. To me, this includes the physical, spiritual, mental, and emotional aspects of myself. Let’s say I  I allow myself time in my day for some “me time”, but all I do during that “me time” every day for a week is watch Netflix. Do I feel that sense of harmony within myself at the end of the week? Not at all!

Yes I have given myself some “me time”, but I have not done anything physical, spiritual, or emotional. So my self as a whole person is still not balanced. I’m not saying that I’m never going to watch Netflix again. Not at all. I’m just saying that I would feel much better at the end of the week if I watched a little bit of Netflix, worked out, did my yoga, read a book, and played piano for a little while. When all of these things are involved and balanced, I feel harmony in my life.

Create Your Harmony

So, do you want to feel that harmony in your life? Do you want to feel productive, balanced, and content? I think we all do! So let’s do it! Get you a nice cup of coffee, find a quiet space, and start figuring out why you’re life isn’t balanced right now and what you’re going to do to fix it.

This is not going to be easy. You have to be very aware of every element in your life and how much time you are spending on each thing. You have to be ready and willing to admit and accept the area of problem. Do you have too much on your plate and need to cut back somewhere? Are you spending too much time doing things you love when you should be focusing more time in other areas?

It’s not easy to analyze your life and how your spending your time and admit, “maybe I’m spending too much time watching Netflix.” As challenging as it may be, it is so worth it. It feels so much better when your life feels balanced. Take it from me, it really does make a difference when you can create and achieve harmony in your life.
